Verdict: ClickUp is the right pick for a remote team that wants one workspace for tasks, docs, time tracking and dashboards and has someone willing to own the setup. If nobody on the team wants to be the "ClickUp admin," pick Asana or Trello instead. You'll trade some features for a tool people actually open.

What you actually get

ClickUp packs more into one subscription than any other tool in our project management category. That includes native time tracking (Asana and Trello need an integration for this), Gantt and timeline views, goals, whiteboards, forms, docs and chat. G2 users rate it 4.6/5 across more than 13,000 reviews. The praise mostly centres on flexibility and on replacing several separate tools.

The flexibility is also the cost. A new workspace opens with spaces, folders, lists, custom fields, statuses and views all configurable at once. Teams that skip deliberate setup usually end up with a structure only its creator understands.

The free plan is narrower than it looks

"Unlimited users and tasks" is real, but the limits that matter for a working team sit elsewhere:

Pricing math for a 10-person remote team

• Unlimited: $7 × 10 × 12 = $840/year on annual billing ($10/user monthly)
• Business: $12 × 10 × 12 = $1,440/year on annual billing ($19/user monthly)
• Business + Brain AI (AI is a separate add-on at $9/user/month annual): $2,520/year

Business is the realistic tier for most teams. It's the first plan with unlimited dashboards and enough automation runs for status-change rules across several projects. Remember that AI isn't included in any base plan, so add it to the budget if anyone expects AI summaries.

Where it falls short

• Speed in large workspaces. ClickUp's own public feedback board has multiple long-running threads about slowness. Users describe status changes and due-date edits that take seconds to save. ClickUp has said its 3.0 rebuild improved performance, but complaints continue. Teams with thousands of active tasks should trial it with real data volume, not an empty workspace.
• Onboarding cost. Every team member has to learn ClickUp's hierarchy (Workspace → Space → Folder → List → Task). In practice, that's where adoption stalls for non-technical teammates.
• Each built-in module is shallower than the dedicated tool. Docs are weaker than Notion, chat is weaker than Slack, and whiteboards are weaker than Miro. Consolidating only saves money if the shallower versions are good enough for your team.

Choose ClickUp if

• You bill time to clients and want time tracking inside the task tool without paying for Harvest or Toggl separately
• You're replacing three or more separate subscriptions and someone will own the configuration
• You need Gantt and timeline views on a budget. Both are unlimited from the $7/user Unlimited tier

Avoid ClickUp if

• Your team is non-technical and wants something usable on day one; Trello or Asana are faster to adopt
• Your workspace already holds thousands of tasks and speed is a hard requirement
• You only need task boards. You'd be paying in complexity for features you won't use
